Being a business owner is a lot of work. I went from being a sales and business development professional selling on behalf of another company to selling for my own business – it’s nothing like being employed.
When you’re running your own business, to-do lists can seem never-ending, the unread emails in your inbox grow by the day and you feel like you’re running from one place to another. Time for yourself? Doesn’t seem like an option. If this sounds familiar, then I’m so happy you came across my blog today.
I know being an entrepreneur makes it hard to take time out of your day to take care of yourself – especially when there’s so many other things to do! But if you don’t give yourself a break, you can reach a point of exhaustion, left without energy and close to a burn-out. I’ve seen it happen before. This is why I would like to talk about the importance of self care in business and share some tips with you.
What is self care?
Self care means to consciously promote your own physical, mental and emotional well-being. It’s really anything you do for yourself that makes you feel better.
Practicing self care is a bit of a buzz phrase of late, but it really is crucial to prioritise it and even taking a short break in between tasks can go a long way. Let’s have a look at why it is so important for entrepreneurs to prioritise self care?
The importance of self care in business
The importance of self Mental health and well-being should be as much on your mind as everything else that’s going on in your business. So let’s have a look at how self care can help business owners be their best version?
1. Self care reduce stress and anxiety
If you’re running your own business, you want it to do well. Who doesn’t? But constantly thinking about your biz doesn’t do you any favours either. Having lots of responsibilities and worrying about what to improve and how to make your clients happy can heighten your stress levels by a lot.
Stress can have negative impacts on your mind and body if you don’t manage it properly. Here is where self care becomes especially important: It helps you to activate the body’s relaxation response and as a consequence, cortisol and adrenaline levels in your body can be reduced. Self care ultimately helps to reduce stress and create a more balanced everyday life, even if yours is one of a busy entrepreneur!
2. Practising self care gets you more productive
It’s really no secret that by prioritising self care, you can improve your concentration and become a productivity powerhouse. If you get more sleep, you will feel more rested. If you eat good food, you fuel your body with energy. The list goes on – Literally anything you do that helps to improve your well-being can make you feel more productive.
If I have a busy day, I still try to take out a couple minutes a day to just look after myself: A quick yoga session in the morning, a stretch between work calls or a walk during lunch break. Those tiny self care breaks work wonders for me!
3. Self care leads to more clarity and creativity
I personally don’t understand why multitasking has somehow become such a positive trait. To me, it really is nothing more than trying to do a million things at the same time. And that in itself just seems so stressful.
I like to be present whenever I’m doing something and direct my full attention to that one task or client. As they say “a calm mind is a clear mind” and I’ve found that whenever I’m in this calm state of mind, inspiration hits me more often and my creative juices flow so much better. So my advice: Do one thing after the other, allow yourself to relax in between and ultimately let self care lead you to more creativity.
4. Boost your confidence with self care
Taking time for yourself and prioritising your well-being can also have a positive impact on the way you see yourself. By putting self care first, you show that you treat yourself with respect – and that can totally boost your self-esteem.
If you feel confident, you feel able to achieve your goals – a mindset that is SO important when it comes to running your own business. You need to be your number one supporter and believe that you can succeed!
5. Self care supports your physical and mental health
Reducing stress, feeling strong and increasing your energy are all things that ultimately support your overall mental and physical health. And that to me highlights the importance of self care in business ten times more.
Put together a self care routine that works for you – I try to make time to relax, get physically active and practice mindfulness on a regular basis… Which brings me to my last point:
Schedule self care
We make plans for everything else – why not do the same for ourselves, too? I schedule time with myself and I really try to stick to it. This method helps especially if you tend to put yourself last when other things come up. Want to take a bath later tonight? Schedule it. In the mood for a movie night? Schedule it. Want to go to bed early? You guessed it right: schedule it!
Sounds silly? Trust me, nothing is too silly when it comes to your well-being and the importance of self care in business.
So keep in mind: switching off from business and taking time for relaxing activities is crucial. Even small acts of self care can have a big impact. Make sure you take good care of yourself!
